trick flow cammed speed density car running!!

Postby fiveooutlaw on Tue Jul 18, 2006 7:09 pm

I just finally got my new motor running. My 87 had 150k miles and had seen its better days. I threw in an explorer bottom end with 30k, tfs 1 cam, slightly worked gt40 heads, svo 1.6 rockers, explorer upper/lower, and egr delete.

It would not originally start, but due to the fact that we found out that the distributor was one tooth. We restabbed the dizzy and she fired right up. Surged for a few seconds then idled dead steady at 800rpm. It was running incredibally rich, but have not changed fp yet.

Odd thing was when we tried to swap to mass air then, the car all of a sudden ran on 6 cyl. Cyl. 5 & 6 were not firing. Checked over everything but was good. Even tried a different A9L, 5 &6 still were not firing. For the hell of it we stuck the speed density comp. back in and unhooked the maf meter, fired right up again on all 8!

Drove it around today and is running a little rich, but overall very well. Very responsive, smooth when driving, slight idle surge but not much, never stalled or anything. I'm gonna try and tweek a few things to see if I can get her running tip top while still sd. wish me luck!

Sounds good, let us know how that cam works in the long run.

I have been waiting to see someone try that cam out on SD. I thought it was kinda out there on the edge. Good luck!

5&6 injectors are pins 14 & 15 - check em out, but they are the same for SD or MAF. wierd!

That is weird, i had a friend who tunes these for a living and he was actually stumped. But running wise it is a bit on the edge, it surges a little bit, and takes a little while for the idle to come down after driving for a while, but I also havent had anyone get a good tune on it yet so.

I will definately check out the pins 14 & 15 then, see if something funny is happening. Thanks alot. I will keep you guys updated.

The idle and idle-down may improve as the EEC adaptive feature learns - give it some time. Mine took 2 weeks or more to finally get zeroed in.

will do, the only part that I hate, is that when it surges its hitting the perfect drone spot. Stoplights are a mess, I've watched and laughed as many have rolled up their windows.

tmoss - does the car drive good now, drive like a stocker once that learning period was over?

Well hopefully my rewards will be the same....or at least close to it. As long as it drives close to stock I will be happy, a slight surge here or there I can handle.

Once I get my 500miles of break in on these new gaskets and clutch, it's going on a dyno to get fully tuned. I would love to see if I can break the 300 n/a rwhp mark on speed density.

After a 2 hour drive my car dialed in and stopped surging with the nx264.

once I get my power steering leaky tube replaced and fix my exhaust leaks from those fun collectors, I will take it on a longer trip. I need some miles on it anyways to start breakin it in. I'm too ancy to see what kind of power its got.

I'm just hoping that since it is on the verge or not really working with sd, that it does calm down after giving it some drive time.

Well this afternoon I tried the a9l again but toyed around, so I tried firing it up without the mass air meter plugged in and bam, fired right up to a dead steady idle on all 8 cylinders. I plugged in the meter and shot right down to 6 again, unplugged it and it shot back up to 8!!

I guess this whole time my mass air sensor had been bad that I bought. I stuck another sensor a buddy of mine had in took it out for a spin and it drove soooo much smoother than with the sd setup. So unfortunately I'm not going to be trying sd because this is just too nice.
